Diwali - A Corporate Affair!

It's the month of October, and there is slight nip in the air... people are looking busier than they usually are. The electric shops are full of different electrical lights with a range of different colours, sizes and shapes. The street markets seems more colourful, with vendors selling rangolis, coulourful diya and most importantly kandeels. Everyshop is adorned with beautiful lights and windows of these shops are adorned with impressive outfits.

Every year, during this time when one enters any market, the kandeels in different shape, sizes, colours and types stare at you from a distance and you want to buy them all. There is always a quest about the choice of Kandeel, diya and clothes too. Basically, its the time of year for loads and loads of shopping!! Well all glamorous things comes at a price. And the price paid not only in the monetarily terms, but otherwise... So it's time of the year, where you house needs cleaning, everything in the house from the remotest corner needs to be taken out and cleant well. Why? Remember our grannies told us... if the house is spic and span goddess laxmi will come to our house!

I feel Diwali is more like a corporate-team-building-acitvity. How? Here is why - You work extra. You get appraised based on your performance.you look busier than before. Since kids are the youngest in the house, we automatically become the executives who do all the 'dirty' work. If you have an elder brother/sister then he/she becomes a senior executive, who works little but bosses more. Then, you have the vice president who jots down the house chores and other requirements. And then there is a Chief financial Officer head who handles all the finances. Like we all would have guessed by now the VP is by default the mothers and CFO are fathers. And Diwali are annual reviews!

So, ideas are taken from executives, the VP decides weather it's feasible or no and finally the CFO approves of the cost. Now is the time for team building exercises... the team sits together allocates the areas to be worked on (cleaning, buying lights, purchase of firworks/ clothes..etc) and then executes. There are arguments, quarrels and compromises but it all comes to a conclusion. And after all the work done, it's time for reviewing executive's pay and time for Bonus! So we receive an amount, depending on the VP and CFO's mood, so that you could go and get yourself something for Diwali. Well in some families -like mine- the so called Diwali 'appraisal' is the same every year! So the end result is that the investors -guests- are impressed by the company's hardwork and invest - in the form of compliments- and the management is happy and if the management is happy the executive are happy!

So it's a "Happy Ending" for both executives and management... Oops.. I meant for both kids and parents!

HAPPY DIWALI!
